The National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) has established ten regional centers to provide information, training, and technical assistance to employers, people with disabilities, and other entities with responsibilities under the ADA. The centers act as a "one-stop" central, comprehensive resource on ADA issues in employment, public services, public accommodations, and communications. Each center works closely with local business, disability, governmental, rehabilitation, and other professional networks to provide ADA information and assistance, placing special emphasis on meeting the needs of small businesses. Programs vary in each region, but all centers provide the following:
·

In November of 1998, CESSI was awarded the Americans
with Disabilities Act Program Assistance Coordinator contract from the National
Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR). This three-year
contract with the Department of Education provides support services to the
Disability and Business Technical Assistance Centers (DBTACs) and a National
Employment Research and Demonstration (R&D) Project. In its coordination
capacity, CESSI also acts as liaison between the Federal agencies involved with
the ADA and the NIDRR grantees.
CESSI is an acronym for Cherry Engineering Support
Services Inc., and was founded in June 1992 by Col. Fred V. Cherry, USAF
(Ret.). In July of 1996, the company was certified as an 8(a), Small and
Disadvantaged Minority Business. Since its founding, CESSI has had many
contract opportunities including disability-related projects. Several projects
provide information resources and technology demonstrations to assist employers
in locating and selecting equipment adapted to the needs of employees with disabilities.
CESSI also has contracts with the President's Committee on Employment of People
with Disabilities and with the National Council on Disability.
